Virology (viruses, viroids, phloem-limited prokaryotes, virus-like agents)

Characterisation of new species and/or isolates of known viral agents (citrus, stone fruits, pome fruits, grapevine and fig)

This research line is aimed at providing novel insights into virus diseases of the fruit species grown in Italy and throughout the Mediterranean. This knowledge is fundamental for the Mediterranean countries to compile their lists of quarantine pests, to plan in loco disease monitoring and control, to develop technical protocols for the certification of propagating material.

The research activities focus on the etiological role of the different viruses in the occurrence of some fruit tree diseases through inoculation to healthy plants and disease reproduction under controlled conditions.

Pure culture and isolation in laboratory conditions made it possible to characterise a number of viral agents from a biological, serological and molecular point of view and in some cases the whole genome was sequenced and decoded. A number of unknown viral entities could be described (MAIB is an internationally-reputed centre for the study of fig viruses and has made a positive contribution  to the description of several new grapevine and olive viruses) along with virus isolates of already known species of great economic importance. In particular for grapevine and olive, the genetic variability of virus populations of different origins was thoroughly investigated. In some cases, the virus characterisation was completed by the assessment of natural vector transmission to determine the dissemination potential in nature.
