Saline irrigation practices and management

The use of non-conventional water resources as an irrigation source implies finding reasonable and sustainable answers to the following question: Can agriculture make use of marginal water (saline one) in a way that is technically sound, economically viable and environmentally non-degrading? In other words, is it a viable proposition to use saline water for agricultural production? In view of the above raised questions, it is quite apparent that the overall goal of the research programme is to increase the potentiality and sustainability use of saline water in irrigation through the establishment of new strategies for its use which is technically and scientifically based on proper integrated crop, water and soil management.

Objectives:

The objectives of this research are:

  • Development of crop/water management under saline irrigation practices;
  • Evaluation of crop salinity tolerance with respect to the different growing stages;
  • Eco-physiology studies for a better understanding of soil-plant and crop interrelationships under saline irrigation;
  • Testing the different approaches for saline water management including: 
- Irrigation (method, amount, interval, water quality);
- Leaching (amount, method, timing, water quality);

Use of multi-irrigation water sources of different qualities;

Modality of water application (blending and alternate application of waters of different qualities).
  • Supplementary irrigation with saline water to cope with drought conditions;
  • Sustainable saline water use for irrigation on large scale and long term using empirical models that relate crop yield and irrigation management under saline irrigation; 
  • Fullfil the existing knowledge gap in this field with more emphasis on:
- Integrated crop soil water management under Mediterranean arid climate;

Analysis of crop response to water and soil salinity;

Varietal responses to water and soil salinity;

Crop response to salinity and drought.
Justification:

The programme succeeded in providing the research and academic institutions with the well trained human resources needed, thereby improving the institutional capability in setting the appropriate plans and management strategies to avoid any salinity problem due to the use of this source for irrigation on the long term.

In addition to the notable improvement in capacity building in this field, numerous articles were published in international Journals, and in proceedings of international and regional conferences, seminars and workshops. Such published work increased the know-how in this field providing a wide range of information that are still missing but needed to set up the appropriate policies and strategies for sustainable use and management of the low quality water (the saline one). A relatively high number of candidates from most developing countries in the Mediterraneancarried out their MSC studies under this programme. In the last 10 years (1999-2009) nearly 30 candidates from most of the developing countries of the Mediterranean obtained their Master degree in this topic with an average of 3 candidates per year.

The program potentialities are mainly referred to providing the research and academic institutions with the well-trained human resources needed, thereby improving the institutional capability in setting the appropriate plans and management strategies to avoid any salinity problem due to the use of this source for irrigation on the long term.

This research is considered extremely important because it can improve the institutional capability in setting the appropriate crops and management strategies to avoid salinity problems due to the use of this source for irrigation on the long term.

  • Weaknesses

This research requires the participation of a certain number of people (senior and junior) who are able to deal with agronomic and environmental issues, and such integration is often very difficult to achieve.
